After releasing on Columbia Records, New York's Ari Hest launched the highly successful 52 project (writing, recording, and releasing a new song every week for a year) and has since gained an international following. 52 Project was part of his own musical evolution as he adjusted to a changing industry. The project was heralded by Billboard and Blender magazines as an example of a musician's ability to create music using home recording and the power of a grassroots campaign. The project pushed him to the #1 spot on the iTunes "Singer Songwriter" charts and he was asked to play at the 2008 Democratic National Convention.

After selling out revered venues like Seattle's Triple Door, Ari will be stopping by at The Roost immediately after he gets back from a show in Germany.

Dana Little and Cara Alboucq will be starting off the night with their own unique pop sets. Folks, this is a night of beautiful people and music!

Milo Greene - February 7th

We've had some incredible acts come through The Roost these past years. On February 7th, LA based Milo Greene is bringing the rumblings of big things to our boutique music venue. They don't even have an album out yet, but the critic's accolades are streaming in while they tour with bands like The Civil Wars.

NPR named them one of their top "Uprising" bands of 2011 and said, "...Milo Greene is ready to blow up." Esquire Magazine has named them one of their top 8 bands to watch in 2012. Critic accolades aside, Milo Greene is simply producing some incredible music with talented musicians. We are certain that on February 7th you'll be walking from The Roost singing your own accolades.

2012 is poised to be a huge year for Milo Greene and we're honored that they've chosen The Roost to kickoff their 2012 west coast tour.

Opening will be Seattle's power pop band Curtains for You. They've been making waves of their own in the northwest music scene.

The Roost is in the middle of another amazing stretch of music and we continue it with Cody Beebe and The Crooks on February 3rd. They will be energizing our stage with a unique blend of rock, country, blues and jazz. The band members like to refer to it as "progressive Americana." Whatever you call it, call it great Roost music!

They've shared the stage with the likes of Buddy Guy, Stevie Nicks, Jimmie Vaughan, KD Lang, Augustana, Josh Turner, Little River Band, Jason Reeves, Randy Rogers Band, Rooney, Afroman, Ari Hest, Drew Davis Band, This Providence, Tonic, Handful of Luvin', and Massy Ferguson.

Their most recent album "Friends of the Old Mill" was crafted by legendary Producer, Jonathon Plum (Peal Jam, Blind Melon, Queensryche, Alice in Chains, Candlebox.)

Opening for The Crooks will be Daniel Kirkpatrick and The Bayonets who combine the musical stylings of Elvis Costello and Tom Petty.

Roost Fans, we've got an amazing series of musicians heading your way in early 2012. Kicking off the new year will be Drew Grow, of Drew Grow and the Pastor's Wives.

Across the globe, there are hundreds of young men and women who have taken up acoustic guitars, inspired by the grand folk and country tradition, and set about put their sleeve-worn hearts into musical form. But the result is often feather light and wispy and all too easily forgotten amid the din of the modern age.

Not so with the music of Drew Grow and the Pastors Wives.

The music on the band's self-titled LP shares the influence of many current indie artists, but carries with much more meat and gristle to chew on. It feels like it was molded after a long life of ups and downs, all set a soundtrack of the curlicued songwriting of Bob Dylan, the drowsy despair of Bill Callahan/Smog, and a thick stack of dusty Motown and Stax 45s.

We are excited to announce that opening for Drew Grow will be St. Paul de Vence. They will be releasing their debut album at the Columbia City Theatre on January 29 th.

The Roost is proud to present Lost Lander this Saturday with doors open at 8pm. This up and coming band out of Portland has been getting a great deal of attention in Northwest music scene. Their orchestral pop sound has been selling out shows at famous locations like the Doug Fir Lounge. Their newest album was produced by Brent Knopf, of Menomena fame.

Be ready for deep hooks and throwbacks to Peter Gabriel-esque songwriting.

The Portland Mercury has called the new album, "Stunning."

Brooklyn-based folk pop composer Gabriel Kahane is coming to The Roost. Part composer and performer Gabriel Kahane is a peerless musical polymath, invested equally in the worlds of concert, theater and popular music.

"THIS IS MUSIC WITH SOMETHING TO SAY" (LA TIMES),

Gabriel writes string quartets, musicals and pop songs, and his heart is fully in all of those endeavors. On his rich and focused sophomore LP, "Where are the Arms" Gabriel has brought together an all-star band in support of eleven intricate and literate, yet clear and accessible songs. On this album, anthemic, pop choruses are followed by intricate brass cadenzas in off time signatures, and folky refrains are interlaced with tightly wound flute filigrees - yet it's always in the service of the song.

Seryn comes to The Roost!

Seryn is a 5 piece band who calls Denton, Texas their home. When listening to the well layered textures of guitars, ukulele, accordion, bass, viola, banjo and various percussion, it's hard to imagine "This Is Where We Are" is the band's debut effort. The band's strength resides in their vast musical talent and understanding of dynamics. Their beauty is gracefully displayed through chilling harmonies. Each member and their voice carry the same importance. One is not complete without the other.It is in this craft that the young band shines so bright. It has earned them a sound that isn't easily defined, but still proven triumphant. What may first appear as straight folk songs, later transcend into menacing walls of sound. The term "Folk-Pop" has been thrown around and maybe it loosely fits, but we will leave the definitions up to you.

Head to The Roost on June 14th and get to listen to the highly touted band.

Bellingham blue grass favorite, Polecat, is a five piece band conceived from the dangers of Aaron Guest. Consisting of a fiddle, upright bass, 12-string guitar, electric guitar, drums = amped-up-country-rock-Americana-roots.

The Gentlemen Buckhunters are a four-piece bluegrass band from all over the West, formed in Seattle. The Buckhunters blend elements of traditional bluegrass with hard-driving Americana and a whiskey-drunk reverence for all things absurd.

Roost fans, we have some great news. We just secured a great opener forWesafari on November 6th. Levi Fuller will be opening at 8:30pm and doors open at 7:00pm. Read this review by the Seattle Weekly:

"Fuller is . . . a talented and astoundingly prolific songwriter on his own. His solo fferings have matured with each release, and his latest, Colossal, is a striking collection of minimalist acoustic songs. Fuller arranges his instruments carefully, doing a lot with a little - say, a cello and an acoustic guitar - and making it fill up an uncommonly large space".

At 8pm on November 6th Seattle’s underground electroacoustic experimental group, Wesfari, will be performing at The Roost. Part Pinback, part Michael Jackson, part Bon Iver...part many many things. The common line, though, has been the solid songwriting of Rick Wright, who has been backed by various lineups. This September, The Lucky Mystery Tour, which makes a stop at The Roost, will be the most complete presentation of Joel Ricci's funk artistry, production and leadership. The performance will take on two elements: the first will be as Lucky Brown, presenting the people with grooves and impressions that will resonate deeply within their bodies, this part will be a pure, old- fashioned, joyous backyard dance party.

Then, the second half of the show belongs to Mystery Chi, Lucky Brown's transformation into his alter ego represents the soul's flight into higher consciousness, the future, and things unknown and unfamiliar. The Lucky Mystery Now Orchestra will assemble for this second half inside The Roost and dive fearlessly into this unknown abyss, with Mystery Chi as the conductor. It is not known exactly what will happen, but the artists request total silence from which to paint their sonic and rhythmic impressions. The Lucky Mystery Now Orchestra will include original members of The Funk Revolution and Crawdad Farmers, but will also have added percussionist and 2nd guitarist for these few very special shows. Lucky Brown & The Lucky Mystery Now Orchestra will perform the following night at a club in downtown Bellingham, but Mystery Chi's second-half, site-specific multidisciplinary performance art installation will not be repeated.

Weather permitting it looks to be another amazing outdoor show. Kelly Joe Phelps and Corinne West will be starting around 8pm. RSVPs are welcome, but will be closing that very soon. Pete Farmer will be opening for the duo for his second showing at The Roost. He will be playing his homemade foot drums for the crowd. There is talk this may be the first outdoor concert of our summer concert series, but this is all dependent on weather and conditions. The Roost is ramping up for Gregory Alan Isakov on June 19th. We have quite the show laid out for you that night. Opening at 7pm will be the Celtic band Giants' Causeway. Following their set, we are excited to present Patrick Park. This is what Inner Ear Media has to say about this singer songwriter:

Not necessarily musically, but in the approach, Patrick Park reminds me a lot of earlier folk singers like Carole King, James Taylor, and even Bob Dylan in his earlier days. These people could deliver a song (and they still can!) to you with so much conviction and at the same time invest in it personally so that you not only believe the song but that it literally speaks to you. Patrick Park also possesses this quality. Apart from being an excellent songwriter he is also a superb performer. Musically one might put Park in the same strait as artists like Joseph Arthur or Tom McRae.

Traveling for years the same well-worn roads of the touring musician (crossing paths constantly, missing one another by a day here or a week there), it wasn’t until the end of 2009 that Corinne West and Kelly Joe Phelps found the opportunity to play music together. Performing alongside Corinne on a series of CD release shows for her most recent record ‘The Promise’, Kelly Joe discovered that he’d met a true musical partner, and she the same. The next thought was simultaneous and obvious – forge their respective solo careers into one as a duo.

The fundamental layer of Corinne and Kelly Joe’s new partnership is mutual admiration and respect both for the ideal of honest, inspired, poignant art, and each other’s own creativity and musical vision. They also share an undeniably ravenous passion for the acoustic guitar. From this foundation these two are creating beautiful, exceptional music. Well, The Roost's summer headliners are really taking off! We have just booked Kelly Joe Phelps for a show on June 23rd! Kelly Joe Phelps will be joined by the progressive folk artist Corinne West! If you haven't seen Kelly Joe play before here is a little taste of what you can expect.

I have seen Kelly Joe Phelps twice now and every time I was amazed by the combination of his guitar abilities and blues-like voice. His ability to pick and play complex combinations of chords is reminiscent of a Leo Kottke, but his voice is a unique soothing raspy tone. We truly have a world class musician booked for you guys come June 23rd! Here is a snippet from a scintillating review of his newest album Western Bell.

His eight album of solo acoustic guitar improvisation should be enough to land him status in the company of legends, if he isn't there already.

Corinne West has received equally impressive press for her music. A quote from American Roots.com:

Anna Coogan brings her best to The Roost

Anna Coogan and her band put on quite a show last Saturday. Opening up for Anna was Pete Farmer who constructs his own drums. Both musicians were at the top of there game and continue to show the type of talent that The Roost can draw. Coogan's Bellingham CD release party was a part of a larger national tour.

Coogan's guitarist, Daniele, flew in from Italy for the American tour and was visiting the States for the first time. He noted that house shows like The Roost do not occur in Rome (his home town). He has been impressed with the music scene here and looks forward to the tour. Anna said that venues like The Roost are the future of music and it is "saving music one show at a time."

On Sunday March 6th at 8pm Anna Coogan will be holding a CD release party for her newest album "The Nocturnal". We are excited to say that we expecting the whole band to be accompanying her. Anna Coogan's newest album has been receiving rave reviews. Check out this one from Wildy's World.

"Coogan floored me from the opening notes of The Nocturnal Among Us. Her voice is truly something special, and Coogan has a talent for phrasing that's somewhat rare in Pop music. A Tale of Two Story Tellers

The Roost offered its audience a rare treat of two great story tellers: Andrew Calhoun and Robert Blake.

The night started off with Robert Blake playing some of his brand new material for the first time to a live audience. It was an opportunity to watch Blake develop his material and see how it resonated with listeners. Blake's material ranged from insightful riffs about the travails and reality of couple-dom, to comedic serenades about "why he didn't call". Each original piece was a well written descriptive story. It was a cornucopia of Blake and the crowd was pleased.

Following Robert, Mr. Calhoun took the stage. His two hour+ solo set touched on a myriad of spiritual and gospel pieces, but also included Calhoun originals such as his song about the importance of a collection of pens. He frequently invoked the participation of the audience; having them repeat choruses, which recreated the purpose of the spiritual songs he was singing: Spiritual songs were not meant to be sung on stage, but to be sung as a group. Calhoun's set was a combination of tried spirituals, unique vocals, poetry and historical narrative. He lived up to what the Chicago Times called "one of folk music's top song smiths." At times recanting the history of monotheism and polytheism as it emerged from Africa and at times retelling the history of old spirituals.

For a last set, Calhoun, Blake and Bellingham harmonica extraordinaire Mark Huber teamed up for a talented threesome on a handful of songs before closing the night out.

The Roost is known for its talented and unique musicians that play for extended sets. It is always something special to be treated to two great story tellers. We hope to see them both back at The Roost very soon.

Andrew Calhoun comes to The Roost

On Feb. 7th at 8pm come see Andrew Calhoun who the Chicago Tribune has dubbed "one of folk music's top song smiths". Calhoun is a master writer, clever humorist, and compelling folklorist. He runs a record labelwhich has released records by Anais Mitchell,Rachel Ries, Louis Ledford, Dar Williams, Erin McKeown, and many others.

Bellingham's own Robert Sarazin Blake will be giving the opening performance. The suggested donation is $8-$10 and it includes a free drink!

For all of you that made it to the show last night we know you were not disappointed. Those that didn't make it, I am sorry, but you missed out! By far, the most energetic show we have had to date. It was the perfect mixture of high energy Americana and a few slow ballads. They performed a double encore and played for over 3 hours!

Bill, the bassist for the The Spoonshine Duo said, "This is the best house show we have ever played." Jacob said, "We love The Roost!"

The Roost has just recently booked one of the region's best Americana bands! The Spoonshine Duo most recently played a show at Grahams Restaurant in Glacier, WA in early January. They are an evolution of their larger band Spoonshine. On January 27th at 8:00pm be prepared to move to this high energy Americana music. There are few bands that offer the level of energy that these guys do. Lead singer Jacob Navarro's fast paced mandolin will keep you hanging on every chord. For some reviews of their albums and to get an idea of where they will be playing next head here.
